Excerpts of letters sent by Donald to Effie Ehlers Fowler.

1. July 20, 1982.

"...I have looked into the Ehlers tea and come up negative. I discovered, after checking several sources, that the Ehlers Company is no longer in existence. It was bought out by the McCormick Company a few years ago. At this point I was not able to discover if there are products still marketed under the Ehlers name. I suspect that Albert Jr. just wanted the bucks."
"At any rate, I checked a number of local supermarkets as far as New York City and New Haven. They have not seen Ehlers products for some time....Should you want to pursue this farther, the Ehlers Tea and Coffee Company was taken over by McCormick & Co. Inc, Baltimore, Maryland, 21202. You might want to contact them to determine if there are still some tea bags in stock."
"Sorry I couldn't do more. However, I gave it the good old Ehlers try. When on the phone I think I told you that back in the fifties the slogan of the company was 'Sound your A for Ehlers'. Perhaps Wayne might like to use it in his campaigns."

2. September 24-25, 1984.

"...At age (62 next February) it occurs to me that too much time often lapses between correspondences among blood relatives. Two Sundays ago we went to Spring Valley, NY---just above the New Jersey border---to attend a memorial service for a kin of mine---Von Sassenscheid, my mother's family---and saw cousins some of whom I had not seen in forty years. At the memorial they came from Tucson, Ariz., Cocoa, Florida, Virginia Beach, etc. With one or two exceptions we'll probably never meet again...."
"I have wanted to get up to Rhode Island to see Uncle Ed but other things kept happening. I'll still try to make it before the snow flies. We have had a quite an eventful year so far. Last October I had another heart attack and was hospitalized in New Haven and on December 1st had another by-pass operation in Milwaukee. (The first one was ten years ago in Cleveland.) On Christmas eve our daughter (age 38) found a lump in her breast which turned out to be cancer. She had successful mastectomy in January and the first of three reconstructive surgeries this summer. She will have the second in October. Meanwhile, Betty's elderly aunt (78) had a serious stroke in New York City and we had to transfer her to a nursing home in Connecticut and close up her apartment. She still lives but almost a vegetable. Since then Betty has been hospitalized with what was diagnosed as diveticultitus. Today at 2:30 she is to have micro-surgery for inflammation of the knee (as an out-patient in a Bridgeport hospital)."

"9/25/84. Thank you for the article about Wayne. I note that he is a Democrat. For some unknown reason it was in the back of my my mind that he was Republican & reading between the lines of the article, I would think that he has a good chance of reelection. At any rate please tell him I wish him luck even though he is a Democrat. By the way Uncle Ed has always been a staunch Democrat."
"Incidentally, a colleague of mine has had dealings with a Brian Ehlers who works for the Apple Computer Company in, I think, Cupertinio, California. Are we related?"

3. October 3, 1988.

"...Betty had to be taken to the hospital with all the symptoms of a heart attack. It turned out, after a number of tests, that it was not a heart attack but hiatal hernia for which she is being treated."
"...Uncle Ed has died in a nursing home. I have enclosed a newspaper clipping that Deb sent me. Just a few weeks before Uncle Ed dies his son, my cousin, died suddenly."
"Ed Jr's son Michael and I are now the last of the Ehlers males on the East Coast. I am the older of the two (65) and I plan to retire in January 1990."
"Our daughter, Liz, is married to an army officer stationed in Frankfort, Germany and both granddaughters are attending American schools. Kimberly will be 16 this month. She has made the Honors Society in English and is on the soccer team. Meredith is 13 and she has honors in science. I think it runs in the Ehlers family."
